I’ve been quiet on here for a while because I’ve been entirely immersed in a super exciting new project. I’ve been creating a brand new dungeon that is now available to hire in North London, it is called The Peacock Parlour!
It’s taken a massive amount of work over a few months. I was frequently working 14-16 hour days taking charge of all aspects of the build; managing the project as a whole, teams of professionals and volunteers, budgets, design, research, ordering, and literally building the walls alongside my team.
The bare beginnings
We started off with a plain white, empty warehouse space. One of the most important jobs was to do as much sound insulation as possible. Being in a fairly central London location there are people around, and we need as much privacy as we can get. As the sound insulation was atrocious so the first job was to fill any holes, then build new walls in front of the existing interior walls. This was to create extra layers for the sound to travel through. We used Rockwool and acoustic soundboard to make as soundproof a wall as possible within a reasonable budget and attractive appearance. This whole task was made more interesting by the fact that the walls reach 7 meters high at some points!
Building the internal structure
We also built a hallway in order to prevent sound travelling out the front door, and to create some privacy for people entering and leaving. Wouldn’t want any nosy neighbours peering in and seeing all the BDSM kit. Well, all bar one wall, that was left until after my equipment arrived. Building a venue that we couldn’t bring the BDSM equipment into would not have been ideal!
The kitchen was beyond minimal at simply a sink and 2 cupboards, so we added 3 extra cupboards and extended the worktop to accommodate a small fridge, microwave and washing machine.
Decorating the space
Once the basic structure was built we moved swiftly on to decorating. There was a LOT of ceiling and wall to paint. From the beginning I knew the exact shade I wanted most of the place to be, it’s a nice mid grey that shows up coloured lighting well. My idea had always been to have fairly plain walls that could be made bright and interesting with colour changing lighting. I chose to paint the roof black to compliment this. On the advice of a trusted friend. we decided that some highlights by painting some pre-existing pillars teal would really make the place pop.
It took a lot of research, but eventually I decided on vinyl tile flooring over a soundproof rubber underlay. It’s robust and hard-wearing, easy to clean, comes in a variety of attractive finishes and is not eye-wateringly expensive. Alongside a couple of very dear friends to whom I will forever be indebted, I layed the entire 60sqm floor.
The final touches were added in a flurry as the deadline for the first session loomed closer. Painting and tiling in the kitchen, wallpaper on the hallway and under the stairs, staining the wood of the handrail.
Bringing in the Dungeon
Once the place was complete (well, satisfactory, I’m not sure it’ll ever really be complete) I brought my equipment from my house to the venue. This has been collected over 8 years of being a professional Dominatrix so there was quite a lot of it to bring in multiple van loads. In fact, my very first flogger from before I became a professional is still there available to use.
Just a few more long days of assembling everything including a 3sqm scaffold frame, setting up lighting and placing equipment and the venue was ready. I was on a tight schedule as I needed the place to start making money ASAP, as you can imagine rent on that space is high, so the longer we were building the more it cost not only in materials and labour, but in rent too. We did all this in 6 weeks, and over freezing Christmas and New Year (and my birthday).
The final effect – a unique dungeon aesthetic
The end effect is that of a cosy, soft and atmospheric dungeon. Domestic on one side, and industrial on the other, but neither exclusively so. A gothic boudoir. Not the standard medieval dungeon, but not quite a domestic space either, somewhere in between. A fantasy land you can lose yourself in… and with 60sqm floor space there is plenty of space to swing a cat.
